When I look out of the window I dream of what I want to see…
Friday December 3
12 – 2 pm at The Public, West Bromwich
Please join us if you are making art and creative in Sandwell and the Black Country and have an interest in showing your work.
On International Day of Disabled People and during The Disability Film Festival at the Public.
It all starts at 12 noon with a performance of monologues by Act Up at 1pm. When you arrive at noon their will be the chance to meet people attending, and here about their work.  The informal event will be chaired by Alan Cheeseman from Chameleon Gallery a user led artist gallery in Walsall and artist Teresa Townsend who initiated the idea of the event.
Joining us will be Rosie Nembhardt from Kuumba, which is run by Sandwell African Caribbean Mental Health Foundation.  Rosie will present two art works which artist Annette Gardner has created with Kuumba’s therapeutic art group
Also their will be a presentation by Georgia Belmont who is lead artist at Black Country Headway. Georgia has been carrying out research into self expression and communication through visual arts with people with acquired brain injury. The paintings are a selection of work from the project which is funded by Grants for the arts.

The Lighthouse Wolverhampton host to disability events on Friday Dec 3

On Friday Dec 3 you are very welcome to join people and groups from the Wolverhampton Disability Network. Together they will be celebrating International day of disabled people. They will be watching a wealth of films by disabled people including the Oskar Bright film festival, which has brought films by learning disabled people to the attention of the nation, winning many awards along the way. If you get there in the morning you can get involved in making a banner for your disability group. Groups who are involved include Our time, Our talk and Neil Docherty Centre. A big thank you to Vicky Gunn for supporting the banner making workshops which are currently touring Wolverhampton. If you are not already involved then join us at 10.30 am till 1.00 pm for a banner making workshop. which has been made possible by the Wolverhampton Disability Network and promises to be the highlight of the day if you want to participate rather than spend all your time in the cinema! At lunchtime their will be a tasty lunch and a unique presentation of song by Expressions Choir, who will be just back from performing in Liverpool at Dadafest – the international festival of deaf and disability arts.   • Rachel Freeman from Blue Eyed Soul Dance Company on work with disabled dancers in Hong Kong, China and Cambodia
  • Alison Smith of Pesky People presents OLILI, a digital platform for cultural organisations to engage Disabled/Deaf audiences

An open event for artists and organisations working Deaf/disability arts, or those looking to programme or develop more Deaf/disability arts. Hosted by the Deaf Cultural Centre, Ladywood Road, Birmingham, B16 8SZ Lunch and refreshments provided. Interested?

The First UK Disability Film Festival kick starts local disability arts activity

Please download the Film Festival program please check with the venue first as there are venue variations in the program to enable local events and activity. Have a look at the Film Festival Website.  In the Black Country the Film Festival is on Dec 3rd at the Public West Bromwich and at The Lighthouse in Wolverhampton. Working Parts are supporting the Wolverhampton Disability Network to create a banner representing disability groups. An artist will be running workshops with groups the first one kicks off at Action for Independence on Albert Road on the 8th November from 10 – 12. The morning is an opportunity for everyone involved to design the banner, which will then be taken to different groups around Wolverhampton. There will be a workshop about banner and slogan making on December 3rd at The lighthouse in the morning, contact Kevin Bailey (disabilitynetwork@onevoice.org.uk) for more information. There will also be Wolverhamptons Disability Choir called “Expressions” at lunchtime.  On December 3rd in West Bromwich at the public group of artists are creating a gathering of artists with an interest in disability and mental health awareness. see The Window blog post.

No Limits perform “Large Chopper” on Oct 1

Catch the No Limits show at the bonded warehouse, Stourbridge on Friday October 1st. They have made Syd Rivers play “Sherlock Holmes and the case of the Aquilla Diamond” their own, mixing improvisations with scripted scenes. Working Parts supported No Limits in 2009 to gain funding from Awards for All for a year long drama project. Have a look at their Facebook fanpage to catch their latest video’s and get a sense of  what to expect, it will be far from elementary! Working Parts are currently supporting the young people who were involved in the drama group to plan for next year.

Abnormally Funny People promoted by Outside Centre

Artists of the Future

Artists of the Future happened on Wednesday, September 8 at Penn Hall School Wolverhampton. The event was BSL Signed. Speakers included Jenny Sealey Artistic Director of Graeae TheartreTanya Raabe Visual Artist,  Caroline Cardus – Visual Artist Andrew Cochrane Visual/ Lens based Media Artist.


It was an afternoon for deaf and disabled artists to explore professional development with leading and emerging practitioners, It also included a presentation by disabled young people from Penn Hall School about their work at Wolverhampton Art Gallery. This was led by Francis Neilsen and described the process involved in the ‘unlocked’ exhibition. Read the rest of this entry →
