Report on The Window event at the Public

December 3, 2010 in Sandwell by Alan Cheeseman

The event was well attended with, I’d say, 24 people in attendance. Teresa started as planned and introduced others peoples pictures by way of introductions, time flew and I talked about my experiences as well as the other organisations present. I found it a very positive meeting with the will of all wanting to have these bullet points as an outcome.
1. To spread the word out to wider audience and other organisations
2. To put together a co-ordinated exhibition/event or performance using visual arts , drama, backdrops and even a choir was suggested. Artists and organisations were supportive of this idea.
3. It was thought that a committee could be brought together to discuss the wider issues regarding the stigma attached to artists from a mental health/disabled perspective. Organisations present offered to host these initial meetings with a willingness to work together to help produce the above.
4. It was also mentioned that we apply for funding to organise the above.
Some very interesting and thought provoking monologues were provided by ActUp Theatre Company, everyone agreeing that they were very good indeed! I think this event could be used as a launch pad for more meetings to be held and to spark off a discussion regarding the problems that mental health and disabled artists suffer.
There will be a meeting on Thursday 20 January at the Public West Bromwich. This will be another informal meeting with an opportunity to be creative and continue showing work. The focus will be setting up a group to enable fundraising for the project and sharing ideas to attract arts funding.
